This drink is actually called Einspänner in Austria, which means the one-horse carriage. It’s said that the drink, poured into a handled glass and filled with whipped cream stayed hot for longer in the cold nights. Nothing like a coffee that was created for horse-driving workers!
Ingredients
- Coffee, preferably aeropress or pour over, but espresso will also do
- Cocoa powder
- Whipped cream, either dairy or plant-based

- Brew the coffee. If using espresso, add an equal quantity of hot water.
- If the cream isn’t whipped, whisk until stiff peaks form and add powdered or superfine sugar as needed
- Using a spoon, gently pour the whipped cream over the coffee to either the same amount or until the glass is filled.
- Sprinkle with cocoa and serve
